The museum was founded by an organization created by William S. Paley, an executive director of CBS, and opened its doors on November 9, 1976. Its collection is dedicated to television, radio, internet, new digital technologies and their impact on society and culture. There is a public library with more than 160,000 television shows from over 70 countries covering nearly 100 years of television and radio history, including news programs, public programs and documentaries, entertainment programs, children’s programming, sports shows, comedy, variety and commercial advertising. The center hosts dozens of daily shows of classic episodes of television hits such as I Love Lucy and The Muppet Show and special movies on topics such as presidential campaign announcements or the representation of teenagers in popular media.
On March 18, 1996, another office was opened in Los Angeles.
