Originally the museum opened in Long Island City in 1934 as a Fire College Museum, in 1959 the collection was moved to Duane Street in Manhattan. A non-profit association, The Friends of the New York City Fire Department Collection, was later created to raise funds for a new home. In 1987 the museum opened its doors at the old fire station, Engine Company No. 30, built in 1904 in the Beaux Arts style.
The collection tells the story of the corps from the first volunteers of the colonial period in New Amsterdam to the current structure with professionals and modern means. The collection includes vehicles and equipment but also toys, working models, portraits, prints and photos.
There is also a video room and a reproduction of an apartment with an artificial smoke machine that shows what happens in case of fire.
The museum also houses a special memorial for the 343 members of the Fire Department City of New York who sacrificed their lives during the attacks of September 11, 2001, and exhibits some of the fire-fighting equipment recovered from the World Trade Center website.
