Founded in 1980 by historian John Kuo Wei Tchen, activist Charles Laie and Chinese artists, historians and students, it recalls the Chinese who emigrated to the United States with particular reference to the west of the country. The exhibition includes audio and video exhibits, photographs and written documents that tell the experiences of this large community.
The new museum building was designed by architect Maya Lin, who also designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.
