Opened on September 7, 2005, the museum was founded by Marlon Suson, a professional photographer and head of the honorary battalion in the New York Fire Department (FDNY). Suson was commissioned by the FDNY to document all phases of the firefighters’ work immediately after September 11, 2001, working for the next seven months, six days a week, 17 hours a day.
In addition to the vast exhibition of photographs, which does not include photos of airplane attacks but only the work of firefighters’ recovery, the exhibition also shows artifacts and audio documents that tell stories but also propose the sounds present at Ground Zero such as those of dogs K-9 barking, radio broadcasts, rescue vehicles and chaplains reciting prayers.
