This group of terraced houses were designed by Gilbert R. Robinson Jr. and built in 1882 for real estate entrepreneur James E. Ray. The houses, ten per side, are two-storey and were rented out to workers and employees of the working class. In the 1960s the houses were in ruins but fortunately in 1970 the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated Sylvan Terrace and the surrounding neighborhood, Jumel Terrace, as a historic neighborhood and the houses were so restored.
