Murray Hill is a neighborhood located in the eastern part of the island of Manhattan between 34th St. and 42nd ST. During the colonial period it was called
Inclenberg, the name of a 10 hectare estate where lived Robert and Mary Murray, a family of Quakers.
During the late 1800s and early 1900s, wealthy families such as the Belmont, Tiffany, Rhinelander, Delano, Morgan and Havemeyer, as well as professionals and politicians, settled in the area and built luxurious residences.
Today, the brownstone buildings of the early 1900s have been almost completely replaced by skyscrapers that house both offices and homes.
