Commissioned by Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States as a country house, it was built in the Federal Style, a classical architecture that appeared in the United States between about 1780 and 1830, based on a design by architect John McComb, Jr., who designed, among other things, the New York City Hall (1803), the Gracie Mansion, Castle Clinton and the Montauk Point Light.
The residence was completed in 1802, only two years before Hamilton's death, and remained the property of the family until 1834.
It later belonged to several owners until it was bought in 1889 by the Episcopal Church of St. Luke. In 1924 it was purchased by the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society, transformed into a museum in 1933 and in 1962 it was entrusted to the National Park Service for management.
The house was moved twice from its original construction site. The first time was in 1889 when the St. Luke Episcopal Church moved it a couple of blocks to prevent it from being demolished as a result of the Manhattan street grid implementation plan, which redesigned Manhattan's checkerboard road network. So in 2008 it was transported to its current location in St. Nicholas Park and reopened to the public in September 2011.
